Stile Hall's Tutor/Role Model program provides U.C. Berkeley students with the unique opportunity to make a significant difference in the life of a low income, inner city child. Tutors are matched one-to-one (or in a few cases, with a small group) and must commit to a full TWO SEMESTERS of WEEKLY (3-4 hours) contact with the child. Tutors will meet with their child(ren) for one structured session a week (with other Tutor/tutees at the school site) under the direct supervision of school staff. They will also meet for a second (flexible) time each week either to tutor the child in the classroom at a time pre-arranged with the teacher, or to do other cultural/recreational activities outside of school, as part of building the relationship. For example, Tilden Park, African American History Museum, Oakland Zoo, playing sports, walking in the neighborhood. Interested students should fill out an application ASAP, as only a limited number of highly committeed volunteers will be selected for each program.
This course meets the field study requirement of the Education Minor. |
